It's my favorite time a year again... time to start our third annual Make a Difference project in 6th grade! Now that we have done this project for a few years, it seems that students have grown to look forward to it. When I first announced in class we would be starting, students cheered, and one sixth grader shouted, "I've been waiting years for this!"
For those of you that don't know, the Make A Difference project is when students each choose a nonprofit organization they are interested in learning about. We research what this group does and how they are trying to make a difference in the world. We use this research to write a business letter, research paper, reflection paper, and prepare a visual presentation to be shared with the school and town communities at our annual Make A Difference Day in the spring. It takes a lot of hard work, but it is always well worth it in the end. So far, we are off to a great start! Yesterday we finished writing business letters to request information and promotional items from our organizations, and we are ready to mail them! Here is where our letters will be going: Riley: Dogs on Deployment Nick: Thirst Project Ben: Camp Ta-Kum-Ta Kaylana: The Humane Society of the United States Samie: Farm Sanctuary Baylin: Girls on the Run Sophie: Canine Express Sam: Paws with a Cause Mya: To Write Love on Her Arms Cadylynn: ASPCA Tim: St. Jude's Children Research Hospital Miss G: We Need Diverse Books Stay tuned for MAD news!

This year, the seventh and eighth graders had a once in a lifetime opportunity to participate in a program called IVECA. IVECA is an award winning program that connects students in different classrooms across the globe. We were partnered with students in Korea, and with our partners we learned about one another's cultures, families, and interests, we shared what we were learning in our classes, collaborated on projects, and gave each other feedback. This all culminated with an amazing live class where we were able to Skype our partner school and hold a joint class! During this time, students debated important issues from both countries and shared cultural music. Our OES students did a wonderful job playing a song from the movie franchise "Pirates of the Caribbean" on the hand chimes. A big thank you to Mr. McKelvey, Ms. Newton, Mr. Coburn, and Mrs. Hastings for all their help and support with the IVECA program and live class! |

I am a 2011 graduate of St. Michael's College where I studied English and Secondary Education. I love teaching, learning, soccer, and buying more books than I could ever possibly read. This is my sixth year teaching at OES. Archives
