Can you believe we are almost 3/4 of the way through the school year? I feel like every time I blink, another month has gone by! Here are some quick updates on what we have been up to:
In class, the 5th graders are learning about figurative language, and the 6th graders are continuing to work hard on their Make a Difference Projects. Look for a blog post about MAD projects to come soon. The 7th graders are just starting a new class novel: Touching Spirit Bear. This is the story of a 15 year old delinquent, who has gone through the Native American Circle Justice process and will be banished to a remote island in Alaska to live in solitude for a year, rather than face jail time for a crime he has committed. In preparation for this novel we have read about restorative justice and discussed the role it plays in other schools and whether or not it has a place in OES. We have also learned about symbolism, which we will be looking for in this book! Click here to see the amazing utopia projects the 8th graders just finished. We have recently been discussing the idea of utopias vs. dystopias in preparation for reading the short story "Harrison Bergeron" by Kurt Vonnegut and then The Giver, a Newberry award winning novel by Lois Lowry. Both of these stories have been jumping off points for some of the most profound class discussions I've ever had in the past, and I cannot wait to hear what this group will have to say!
