Perhaps the thing I love most about my job is how excited I get to start something new. As a new teacher, the past few years have been difficult in terms of planning. Unlike veteran teachers who have much of their curriculum planned and saved from previous years, I felt like I was always two steps behind; there was always more planning, more preparation to be done. I could never quite catch my breath. However, this year I feel like I have enough experience that not only am I catching my breath, but I'm starting to find myself a step ahead, allowing me to try new things in the classroom... and those new things have me so excited! For example, for the first time, we have a class Twitter account. (You can check us out at twitter.com/LAwithMissG) The goal for starting this was to be able to share our learning with a wider audience and to connect with authors. Those goals are starting to become reality... Check out this Twitter exchange from last week: How amazing is that??? As soon as I saw this message, I ran downstairs to show the 5th graders, who are at lunch. They couldn't believe it! Hopefully we will be able to connect with more authors as the year progresses!
Another new adventure we will trying out is the Global Read Aloud. Through the GRA, the 7th and 8th graders will connect with students around the globe (although our primary connection will be with Mrs. Jones' eighth graders in Winslow, Maine) to discuss a common read aloud book. This year we will be reading Orbiting Jupiter by Gary D. Schmidt, which is one of my favorite books. I am so excited about sharing this book I love and seeing what connections we make with some of the nearly 900,000 students also participating! To learn more about what we will be doing with Mrs. Jones' class, check out our joint website here. Stay tuned for more exciting news!
