It's been quite some time since I've updated the blog, and so many great things are happening in language arts!
The fifth graders are have read variations of tall tales and are currently discussing the elements of a short story in preparation for writing their own tall tale. We have wrapped characterization and are now moving on to plot. Sixth graders just finished reading Freak the Mighty, and watched the movie. They are currently working on second drafts of a longer writing piece in which the compare and contrast the book and movie or characterize some of their favorite characters. Seventh and eighth graders have spent most of the first quarter learning about Greek mythology. After reading several famous myths together, students chose their favorite character at the end of September. Since then, students have not only been researching that character, they have become that character! We have created a March Madness style bracket system, and each student will debate another student as to why they should become the ruler of Mt. Olympus, and therefore the supreme ruler of the universe! With the first round of debates over and the field of contestants already halved, we will hold the second round tomorrow to round out our final four. If you stop by the middle school, you may notice some propaganda that has popped up since the start of our debates…. Check out the photo gallery to see pictures of some of these great activities! -Miss G
