Welcome back! I'm so excited to start my third year at OES! I worked very hard over the summer to prepare, and I'm excited to share lots of new changes with everyone.
Some things that have stayed the same are the first day assignments. Like always, students will receive a course overview on their first day. This handout will explain how my language arts class will operate this year as well as share the expectations for students. This will need to be signed by student and parent and returned by Friday. If you ever need another copy, you can find this posted in the handouts section of the site. Also posted there is the Million Words letter to parents. This is an optional assignment for parents that will help me get to know your student better. I typically only send this home with 5th grade parents, but anyone is welcome to write one at any time. I hope to keep you updated on class happenings through this blog, so check back often for updates. As always, feel free to contact me anytime if you have questions! -Miss G

I can't believe summer has come to an end and a new school year is beginning! Even though I now have a year of experience at OES under my belt, I still feel many of the same emotions I felt at the start of my first year: excitement, anxiety, wonder... If you are feeling a little nervous about the first day, you are not alone!
A big welcome to the fifth graders joining the middle school for the first time! There are many changes between 4th and 5th grade, but I am sure you will adjust quickly. For those of you that are returning to the middle school, you will only notice a few changes in the LA room, particularly the set up of our classroom library. Hopefully the new organization will be better for helping you find what you are looking for among our 900+ books! To begin the year we will be reviewing literary genres, which will help us dive right into our independent reading and the 40 Book Challenge. We will also be working hard on preparing for the NECAP tests in October through intensive reading and writing activities. The skills learned here will be the foundation for the work we do the rest of the year. Although it is the first day, some homework has been assigned already. Students in all grades will be asked to share the course overview we read in class with an adult at home. Both the student and the parent will need to sign saying they understand the expectations for this class and return the signed portion by Friday. Additionally, 5th graders will be coming home with an optional assignment for parents: the Million Words letter. Many of you wrote a letter to me last year, and I cannot tell you how valuable that was or how many times I went back and reread them throughout the year. While I generally only assign these letters to the parents of new students, everyone is welcome to write one, even if you have already done so in the past. In case any of these homework assignments get lost or fail to make it home, you may download them from the handouts section of the website (under the links tab). Phew. I'm sure we're all a little overwhelmed with the start of the new school year, so that is plenty for now. I hope that you will explore the rest of the website and check back frequently for updates. Here's to a great year! -Miss G |

I am a 2011 graduate of St. Michael's College where I studied English and Secondary Education. I love teaching, learning, soccer, and buying more books than I could ever possibly read. This is my sixth year teaching at OES. Archives
