Before reading The Giver, eighth grade students learned about utopian societies. Their task was to create their own utopian society in small groups. Each society needed to have a flag, map, and travel brochure. Each group also needed to provide information on what the government, education, and families would look like in their society. Furthermore, each student drew a card naming a societal danger, and they were required to write about how their utopia would deal with or prevent this problem. Each group was given a section of a bulletin board to promote their utopia. Students and staff with then asked to vote on the society they would most like to move to. Stay tuned for the results!
